About

Judgment deserves a record.

I've spent most of my career around people making consequential decisions with money, commitments and other people's trust. I'm drawn to the part where experienced judgment is doing real work but is hard for anyone else to see or check. I want to make that judgment clearer and more trustworthy without pretending the human expertise behind it doesn't matter.

The work behind it

I spent fifteen years with mid-level and major donors. At one point I carried a portfolio of about 600 donor relationships. I hold the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® and Certified Fund Raising Executive credentials.

Across the sector, I've seen plans assume most gifts will come in again, while the work it takes to bring them in often doesn't show up in the plan. I've seen pressure to close gifts in the current year. Those expectations shape what a commitment asks of the people carrying it.

For years I did this reasoning by instinct. Which gifts can land in time? Who has the hours to ask? What happens if one large gift slips? Evident Method makes that reasoning explicit enough to examine and test.

What changed my mind

Before going further, I sat down with leaders of three building campaigns.

One leader's real question was how large the goal should be. Evident Method doesn't answer that. It starts after a goal is set.

Another had already worked out that his project could proceed without further gifts. He had the answer. That cut against my starting assumption, and it changed what I'm testing.

The question now is who else relies on an answer like his: the board, the lender, the lead donors. And what each of them would need to see.

What guides the work

Commitments deserve care. People put money, time, plans and trust behind them.

Judgment deserves a record. Others should be able to see what it rests on.

Uncertainty belongs in the answer. A missing fact stays visible.

People decide. They challenge the assumptions and choose what to do.

Where things stand

I've built a working demonstration on one fictional campaign. The answer for unresolved facts and a fuller decision record are designed, not yet built. Evident Method has not yet been used on a real portfolio or a live commitment.

I lead Evident Method's early work myself. I'm based near Cincinnati, Ohio.
